Dipstick Survey Report

David Wardell and Roger Wilson, August 2020

We had 17 returns for the request on dipstick lengths, to which we have added three from details in the parts lists and workshop manuals. From these we have been able to make an initial stab at what dipsticks were used in which blocks and which T Type models.

The measurements we got for the same dipsticks generally match the expected values for the car and engine block into which they are fitted. And obviously the measurements made in the returns varied by a millimetre or two so we have taken the average.

So here are the results.

24001 TB No tube MG862/69 42 206 Details from parts list and workshop manual, but the number 24052 has been seen on a TB dipstick
24142 TC No tube 24164 42 206 Details from parts list and workshop manual, but the dipstick number SA2412/1 appears in a later parts list
24146 TC Believed no tube 24164 42 206

We didn’t get a return for a TA MPJG block, but there was a return which listed a 24188 dipstick. As far as we know, this was only used in the early Y type engines, using the 24146 block with a short dipstick tube projecting 45mm out of the block. Also, we didn’t receive any returns for dipsticks fitted to Y Type engines, so if you have a Y Type engine we’d really like to hear from you.

The Returns

All the entries we got for the dipstick survey plus the three we garnered from parts lists and workshop manuals are shown below. And of course they show some anomalies which are noted in the Comments column.

Block casting numberCar model Dipstick tube Long tube is 111mm Short tube is 45mmDipstick numberTip to Full (mm)Tip to ferrule (mm)Comments
xxxxxx TA No tube 24164 42 330 The 24164 dipstick is for a TC engine, so this TA may be fitted with a TC engine (the block casting number was not supplied, but for a TA, block = 22288, dipstick = MG706/83). The 330mm is the length to the underside of the handle
24001 TB No tube MG862/69 41 206 Details from parts list and workshop manual
24142 TC No tube 24164 41 206 Details from parts list and workshop manual
24445 TC Tube – length not supplied 24104 41 206 This block is not a TC block (so from a Y or TD). The number of the dipstick could be 24164, which does not need a tube – although the 24445 block normally had the long tube
24164 TC Short or no tube 24164 42 206 The block casting number is probably 24146 – with the last 6 and 4 swapped over
24414 TC No tube 24164 41 206 This block is a Morris 10/M XPJM block, which did not have a dipstick tube
24146 TC No tube 24407 41 305 It is thought that a 24146 block in a TC engine either had no dipstick tube (as reported) or a short dipstick, but the 24407 dipstick requires a long tube – so this combination is puzzling
24146 TD Long tube 24407 42 303 Details from parts list and workshop manual
168421 (round hole) TD Details not supplied 24188 39 249 The 168421 block is normally fitted with the 24407 dipstick and long dipstick tube. However, the 24188 dipstick requires a short dipstick tube, but this was not specified
168421 TD Long tube 24407 43 304
168421 TD Long tube 24407 43 304

xxxx TD Long tube 24407 41 304 Block casting number not supplied
6842 TD Long tube 24407 42 303 It is thought the block casting number is 168421, with the first and last ‘1’ on the block either missing or unable to be read
