A Lasting Tribute to Cecil Kimber and MG’s Oxford Origins
On 6 June, MG enthusiasts, academics, civic leaders and proud MG owners gathered at New College, Oxford, to witness the unveiling of a stunning new bronze sculpture celebrating the centenary of MG and the enduring legacy of its founder, Cecil Kimber.
Located on the site of the original Morris Garages premises, where the MG story began more than a century ago, the sculpture serves as a permanent reminder of Oxford’s remarkable contribution to motoring history and the vision of the man who transformed a modest garage operation into one of the world’s most beloved sporting marques.
The event beautifully showcased MG’s journey through time, with an MG M Type displayed alongside the latest MG3 Hybrid+, linking the marque’s pioneering sporting roots with its modern-day evolution.
Created by renowned sculptor Paul Day, the artwork captures the optimism, innovation and excitement of the early MG years. Through its striking design, the sculpture reflects Kimber’s determination, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, qualities that helped establish MG as an internationally recognised motoring icon.

Guests gathered in the historic surroundings of New College to celebrate not only the unveiling of the sculpture but also the continuing influence of Cecil Kimber’s vision on generations of MG enthusiasts around the world.
As the sculpture was unveiled, applause echoed around the courtyard, creating a fitting tribute to Cecil Kimber and the birthplace of MG. The monument now stands as a lasting reminder of Oxford’s central role in the marque’s history and the achievements of the man whose passion and ambition started it all.
A proud day for Oxford. A proud day for MG. And a well-deserved recognition for the founder whose vision created one of Britain’s most enduring automotive success stories.
