August in MG history

12th August 2016

EX179

Once in a while we like to take a trip down memory lane in MG’s vast history.

In August 1956 EX179 was driven by Ken Miles and Johnny Lockett on Bonneville Salt Flats to take 16 international 1500cc Class ‘E’ speed records, including 170.15mph (273.82km/h) for 10 miles (16.09km) and 141.71mph (228.05km/h) over 12 hours.

The EX179 record breaker was based upon the spare EX175 chassis. Pictures above is: (from left to right) Tom Haig (test driver), Bunny Hillier, Jimmy Cox, Cliff Bray, Henry Stone, Alec Hounslow, and chief engineer Syd Enever.
