MG80!

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 YEARS!

ABINGDON’S MG CAR CLUB announces a global birthday party to celebrate its eightieth year!

The MG Car Club will be staging the largest ever MG event to celebrate the historic organisation’s 80th birthday over the weekend of 16/17 October 2010.

The whole event will start in New Zealand early in the morning and travel westwards around the globe, passing through Kimber House, Abingdon in the middle of the day and finishing in North-West America late that evening.

Events are planned throughout the world, including Australia, Hong Kong, China, Europe, Canada, North America and South America. Indeed, all of the MG Car Club’s 300+ affiliated centres around the world have been invited to engage with the event.

The MG Car Club was founded on 12 October 1930 at the Roebuck Hotel on the Great North Road near Stevenage, England, when about 30 MG owners gathered for an inaugural meeting. From these small beginnings, the club has grown to a worldwide affiliated membership of
35,000 people.

Each club will stage a local event of their choosing, organised and funded by them, and involving as many members as possible.

Enthusiasts will capture the spirit of the event by photo or video, which will then be uploaded to a dedicated website that will be accessible by all.

MG Car Club Chairman John Day said: “The MG marque is adored throughout the world and it is fitting that our eightieth celebration should be truly global by involving our large number of overseas centres. MG80 follows on from a hugely successful MGLive!, when the MG Car Club celebrated sixty successive years of our Silverstone event.

“With MG Motor UK preparing to launch the all new MG6 and also opening a new £5 million design centre at their Birmingham base, MG enthusiasts really do have plenty to celebrate.

“MG80 is a hugely exciting event and one we’re sure will capture not just the imagination of the Classic Car scene, but also the wider community.”

More details will be released in due course.

Kimber House's John Thornley Suite

IT'S BEEN a while since we've featured a picture of The John Thornley Suite on the MG Car Club website.

The above photograph was taken today (Friday 7 May) and shows the completed building. Inside, the John Thornley Suite is virtually complete and functions have already taken place. The new space at Kimber House really is terrific and the feedback from those who have used the room has been very favourable indeed. An official opening is planned for June.

If your passing Abingdon, please feel free to drop in and see the John Thornley Room. These are exciting times for the MG Car Club!

Roy's Tour edges closer!

ROY LOCOCK'S UK tour now has an extra date! The MG Car Club's Lincolnshire centre will stage an evening on Thursday 22nd April which takes Roy's total schedule to fourteen different talks.

Around the UK in 30 days for MG Enthusiast who took on the World!

Oxfordshire based Locock received extensive media coverage in the latter part of 2009 when he successfully completed his mammoth journey, all of which was in aid of Unicef.

The 62 year old who survived earthquakes in Panama, waded through floods in Australia and dodged Taliban bullets in Pakistan is taking his MG Midget, affectionately known as Bridget, to meet fellow Classic Car enthusiasts.

Starting in April, happy go lucky Locock is embarking on a more sedate journey – a month long trip of the UK during which time he’ll give a series of presentations to members of the MG Car Club.

Once again, proceeds from the tour will be donated to Unicef and combined with the substantial sum already raised.

Roy’s tour, aptly titled “An Evening with Miss Bridget”, will begin and conclude, at the MG Car Club’s recently extended headquarters in Abingdon, the site of the old MG factory. His UK journey will see him give presentations throughout the UK – including a talk in Scotland.

Locock has condensed his 18 month journey into a rip-roaring two hour presentation. The former telecommunications engineer will recall tales that will set tongues wagging, jaws clanging and heads shaking!
An excited Locock said:

“Since I’ve been back in the UK I’ve had several requests to attend MG Car Club meetings to relate my adventure around the world. Rather than tackle these on a piecemeal basis I spoke with the MGCC to see if a tour could be arranged and I’m delighted we’ve been able to lock in so many dates.

I know how much passion there is for MG up and down the Country and I’m hoping the tour will prove extremely popular.

Of course, there were many experiences throughout the trip that raised the adrenalin levels. These included my brush with the Taliban, the meteorological extremes of Australia and earthquakes of Panama. Some events were actually pleasant and I will try to give people as complete understanding as possible in the time”.

The tour starts and concludes in Abingdon with a host of venues in between. Anyone interested in attending should contact Chris Seaward at the MG Car Club - 01235 849731.

Free Classifieds Adverts!

The MG Car Club is delighted to announce that members can now advertise their cars for FREE in SafetyFast! - the club's award winning monthly publication.

To help revitalise the Classifieds section in the monthly magazine the MGCC will waive the previous fee of £17.50 to encourage an increased number of listings.

Members wishing to sell their cars will be able to post details to the MG Car Club or upload the details online via the Club website – www.mgcc.co.uk

Submitted classified adverts will appear in SafetyFast! and ten days after the magazine has mailed, on the MG Car Club website.

Safety Fast! has a UK readership of 10,500 whilst the Club website receives around 25,000 hits per month.

MG Car Club Chairman John Day said:

“This announcement really is excellent news for MG Car Club members. We know members like advertising their cars in SafetyFast! and we’re confident free classified adverts will tempt more to do so.

The SafetyFast! team has responded to member feedback and the implementation of free classifieds represents another step of progression for the MG Car Club."

Members wanting to advertise their cars in SafetyFast! should e-mail details through to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
