Still having problems selecting reverse.I believe the real problem could be in the clutch
itself and hopefully not the gearbox!


I had a similar problem with a previous B many years ago -particularly getting it into reverse. This is no consolation to you, but it was the clutch release bearing, not the clutch. The graphite insert of the bearing had worn flat and broken into 3 and the metal housing of the bearing had become the working surface.

It's still an engine out job and whilst doing it you might as well replace the lot -cover clutch and bearing, it could even be worth looking at how much wear there is on the ring gear on the fly wheel and getting that replaced whist the engine is out - not a diy job because of the heating necessary to shrink it on. Also replace the core plug a the rear of the engine as a matter of course, it's very difficult to get at with the engine in place - the others are fairly accessible by comparison.

Thanks once again for the helpful advice.
The senario you describe looks most likely!
Yes I will have to pull the engine out,good idea about the core plug and starter
ring!
I will nurse it through the summer,then get down to work!
