Happy Birthday to us! MG Car Club turns 85 today!

12th October 2015

On the 12th of October 1930 the original club for MG owners, the MG Car Club was born. MGCC_85years_4col
The first meeting took place at the Roebuck Hotel, near Stevenage. Over thirty MGs gathered for that first meeting soon the Club was organising regular sporting events and more.

As MG’s popularity grew, so did the Club and Regional Centres were born to support MG drivers at a local level. The Northern Centre was formed in March 1933, followed by the Scottish Centre (today known as the Caledonian Centre). Within three years the Club’s membership had risen to over 500 and in May 1933 the Club began producing a bi-monthly magazine.

By 1960 the Club’s membership passed 5,000 and in 1969 the Club became independent from British Leyland and left Abingdon, ending up as far north as Boston until in 1988 the properties of 11 and 12 Cemetery Road, today known as Kimber House, became available.

Thanks to the fund raising efforts of the Club’s members, the MGCC returned home to Abingdon in 1990 and the Club has flourished since. Catering for every model since 1924 is no easy task, however with 12 registers and 17 centres, the MGCC works hard to help its members get the most out of their MG. The Club is the most active single-marque race organising Club in Great Britain, with seven race championships catering for all MG models. As well as Circuit racing, the Club’s local centres organise hillclimbs, sprints and autosolos. It also enjoys a World Heritage Partnership with SAIC Motor, the owners of the MG marque, working hard across the world to support and protect the incredible history and heritage of the MG marque.

The past 85 years  have been incredible for the MGCC – who knows were the next 85 will take us?
