THE West Midlands Fire Service has added a new vehicle to its fleet – an MG6 GT.

The car will be used by the service’s Road Casualty Reduction Team (RCRT) and play a major role in helping to reduce the number of road accidents across the West Midlands.

The RCRT works in conjunction with the multi-agency West Midlands Road Safety Partnership, which is committed to reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on the region’s roads.

Young drivers, drink-drivers and speeding motorists are among the groups targeted by the team, whose members take awareness campaigns into schools, colleges and to a huge number of public events.

Watch Commander Sam Lewis, the RCRT’s manager, said: “The MG6 will help us to get vital messages across about many aspects of road safety. We’re really grateful to MG for donating this car to us. It’s a tremendous asset. “We will be using the MG6 to help educate everyone about the importance of road safety issues. The more work we can do in this area, the more lives we can potentially save.”

The vehicle is a 1.8-litre petrol MG6 GT, finished in a special trim to complement its fire service work. The vehicle is designed and engineered at MG’s Birmingham site, where final assembly also takes place.

One of the key target groups of the RCRT’s work is 18 to 29-year-olds. W/Cdr Lewis added: “Thanks to MG’s rich sporting heritage, and their participation in the British Touring Car Championship, the car has real appeal and will help us to engage even more with that age group.”

Guy Jones, MG’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We are delighted to be able to help the Road Casualty Reduction Team in the important work that they do.”
